As you know, there are numerous reasons to start cycling. Some folks are having a hard time keeping up with the rising cost of gasoline and maintenance bills, so they choose to ride a bike. Some are 'going green' and taking an active part in trying to help our environment by choosing to ride a bike over a car.

Still others simply ride bicycles for fun. No matter your reason for choosing to take up cycling, you need to know some important things before you decide on your first bicycle. You will be surprised at how much more there is to a bicycle than just the looks. This article is intended to give you a head's up on what you should keep in mind when it's time to buy your bicycle.

Consider how the bicycle brakes, for one. You have to think about what you are most comfortable with along the lines of stopping your bicycle. If you are choosing a bicycle for sporadic hobby riding, you can get by with the brakes that are little more than pads that squeeze your tires to keep them from moving. If you decide you want your bike for more off-roading adventures, you need a different kind of braking system that can keep up with that particular style. Disc brakes sit within the wheels themselves and work are less likely to give out under stress.

Always keep in mind that you want to test the bike before you buy it. Don't just jump on and jump off though, take a nice little ride for at least a few minutes. Do you know of anyone that would buy a used car without taking it out for a test drive?

It's the same thing with a used bicycle. You need to do this especially if you are spending a lot of money on a bike that you know you will see page use for a long time. Choose the bicycle that you know will fit you. There shouldn't be a problem in making the decision on whether or not the bike is the right size for you, but you should also keep in mind that it needs to fit your riding style as well. You wouldn't want to spend your hard earned money on something that isn't comfortable, would you?

The angle of your seat (also called the saddle) is also important. Bicycles can be tilted in a number of ways. Most people find a seat that is flat to be a bit too uncomfortable, so they tilt it the way that feels the best. Continue to adjust your seat until it feels the best for you. You could leave it as it is, but the narrow part of the seat might not allow you to rest comfortably in a forward leaning position.

How well you fit physically with your bike is what is most important. Selecting a bike with a good fit for you is of the utmost importance, when using a bike as the main way to get from A to B. Safety is important when on a bike but do not overlook comfort, otherwise those long rides will soon grow tiresome.
